Description: Starr Design Group, Inc. most recent project engagement was with the Cherokee Nation as they ventured into the Casino business. Starr Design Group, Inc. was hired by Cherokee Nation Enterprises to solve the issue of Emergency Power System at 70% Construction complete. The Owner did not realize the magnitude of the decision to incorporate a Data Center on the 3rd Floor without a proper Emergency Power System that required minimum 45-minutes of a sustainable clean power source. Scope of Work: Provided “turn-key” implementation of Backup Emergency Power System to the facility as follows:
- Do not impact on-going construction schedule.
- Provide Design Documents, Engineering, Specifications, Procurement, Construction Management and Commissioning of the entire system.
- Integrate systems design into newly installed electrical distribution infrastructure.
- Provide on-site and remote communications with installed Power Monitoring System and automation.
- Provide 4-MegaWatts of on-site generators and switchgear for:
- 3 adjoining Casino’s
- 150 Unit Hotel, Parking Lots & Signage
- Additional Operations and Procedure Manuals
- Provide 45-minutes of clean Uninterruptible Power for:
- Entire Casino Gaming Floor
- Data Center
- Security and Surveillance Center
- Data Closets throughout facility
- N+1 Redundancy
Implementation: The design utilized Active Power, Inc. 1-megaWatt or 900N+1 Flywheel UPS System due to the space constraints and concerns over battery UPS past performances. The installation procedure utilized Construction Management at Risk techniques per AIA Guidelines. This offered the Owner the “turn-key” implementation of the systems, guided by proper Building Engineering Assessment critical to the success of the project. The Procurement procedures followed similar GSA guidelines and the Construction Management required competitive bidding under Davis-Bacon Wage laws with certified payrolls. This offered the Owner best-pricing and qualification by the installing electrical contractors.
The Casino opened at the original set date of completion and took occupancy September 9th, 2004.
